Aimed at medical leading talents training, the national experimental teaching demonstration center of medical functional science of Central South University (the Center) has always followed the new educational ideas of the new era, adhered to the educational concept of "value shaping, knowledge imparting, ability training, wisdom enlightenment". To realize the goal, the center cultivates innovative thinking of college students, adheres to the principle of moral cultivation, and practices the "four-in-one" education mode of professional, general education, study and humanities education.
Physical Infrastructure improvement in our center constructs a specialization, standardization,informatization and student-oriented modern teaching experimental center. TheCenter constantly improves and upgrades the teaching environment and facilities to build a 5C learning environment (Construction, Communication, Connection, Collaboration, Creation) through the innovations of teaching methods, teaching content, curriculum reform, learning space reconstruction, network information technology
The center promotes connotative development, relying on a strong group of key disciplines and a series of curriculum quality engineering groups, promotes development with teaching reform,nurses theteachingbyscientific research, and constantly explores the reform of content, methods andmeans, serving as thepioneer of functional laboratory science in domestic medical community
Nowadays, theCenter shoulders a new historical mission, located in Hunan and facing the whole country, striving to build a first-class experimental center (base) with distinctive characteristics, making greater contributions to the double first-class construction of the university, and playing a demonstrative and radiating role in the standardization, specialty and informatization construction of basic medical laboratories in domestic medical colleges and universities.
1.The Centre Profile
TheCentre of Medical Function ExperimentofCentral South University was authenticated as one of the first batch ofNational Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers in 2006.From 2008 to 2017, the Center served as the leader of the Medical Discipline Groupof the Joint Conference of National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers.
The former director of the Center was Professor Qin Xiaoqun who wasadoctoral supervisorof Physiology (2006-2017), the secretary of the party committee /Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Central South University.The current director of the Center is Professor WangKangkai,vice Dean of The School of Basic Medical Sciences and doctoral supervisor of pathophysiology (2017-present).
The teaching team of the Center is an excellent one in Hunan Province. Among the faculty there are 4 university-level teaching masters,and of themmore than 90% have doctoral degrees, about 80%have overseas study experience, more than 90% have presided over national research projects and the proportion of staff participating in national-level research projects reachesup to100%.
2.Hardware equipment in the Centre
The center covers a total area of 1300 square meters, and is equipped with 9 standardized laboratories, which have realized the standardization of oxygen pipeline and transfusion track, ventilation, lighting, dehumidification and disinfection, and the integration of network multimedia teaching.All laboratories are open to students throughout the day. In addition to conventional teaching equipment, they also provide in-depth technical support for students’design experiments and innovative research. The patch clamp electrophysiology experiment platform and the BUXCO respiratory function experiment platform (currently placed in College Students Innovation Platform), POWERLAB cardiovascular experiment platform(currently placed in the Platform), automatic biochemical instrument (currently placed in the Platform), non-invasive human experiment platform, RT-PCR instrument, etc.have been established for students to study and research. The teaching LAN established by the Center has realized the whole networked experimental auxiliary teaching.
3.Tacticsof experimental teaching reform
(1)Construct teaching system and reform teaching content:Take the student asthe center, relying on two national key disciplines, pharmacology, and pathophysiology of physiology provincial key disciplines, as well as physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology threenational top-quality coursessubjectadvantages and powerful scientific research strength, through organic integrate traditional experimental techniques and new technologies and methods that are constantly emerging in the development of modern life sciences, with the help of modern teaching facilities and advanced teaching methods, systematically train students' basic experimental skills and professional skills of functional experimentation, and cultivate students' scientific thinking, Innovation ability and comprehensive quality of engaging in scientific research. The concept of "great function" runs through the reform of experimental curriculum system, optimizes the experimental teaching content, strengthens the construction of teaching materials, and constantly updates the teaching materials of functional experiment with the results of the reform of experimental teaching content, methods and means.
(2)Reform of teaching methods and means: the forms of experimental courses are diversified(50% of the classiscompulsory experiment, 20%isoptional experiment, 20%isproposition design, 10%isoptional topic design or extracurricular innovative topic research).The teaching methods reflect the unity of standardized training andindividual development, and the teaching means realize the integration of video interaction, network, information and multimedia, so as to further improve the experimental achievement assessment system.
4.Experimental teaching system
At present, the teaching objects ofthe Centerinvolve 13various majors at multiple levels, such as Eight-year degree in clinical medicine, Five-year degree in clinical medicine,Stomatology, Basic Medical Science, Forensic Science, Anesthesiology, Mental Health Profession, Preventive medicine specialty, Nursing, Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacy Specialty, Medical Information Engineering, Biomedical Engineering. In order to meet the requirements of various medical specialties for personnel training, the concept of "great function" is used to guide the reform of the experimental curriculum system. According to the needs, training objectives and teaching hours of different medical specialties, appropriate experimental teaching projects are selected and a series of experimental teaching syllabuses are compiled. Three different functional experiment teaching modules are set up for the eight-year, five-year clinical medicine specialty and five-year non-clinical medicine specialty functional experiment teaching, emphasizing commonness, highlighting individuality, to meet the requirements of different specialties for innovative talents training. Functional experiment is an independent course, and experimental teaching is carried out step by step according to the curriculum system of functional experiment (basic experimental teaching, organ system functional comprehensive experimental teaching, problem-centered design experimental teaching, exploratory experimental teaching).
5.Characteristicof the Center
The construction of experimental center transcends the primary level of "resource sharing" and pays attention to the exploration of experimental teaching law in research universities. The Center has built a curriculum framework for research-based learning and a teaching system for cultivating innovative ability, forming a logically relatively complete and independent course of functional experiment. It has also constructed a structural functional experiment curriculum system of "basic knowledge and basic skill training of functional science, comprehensive functional experiment of organ system, problem-oriented exploratory and design experiment, and students' independent innovation research".
6.Achievement
In order to promote the cultivation of college students' innovation consciousness,research-based learningandinnovation ability,the Center has carried out the forms of self-selected experimental design,designatedscientific research projects bidding, and application for experimental research funds.On thesupport the Center, in recent years, more than 300 students have received national and universityfundedstudent innovation projects;Awarded11 "first prize", 8 "second prize" and 3 "third prize" in the National College Students Basic Medical Innovation Forum and Experimental Design Competition. In the 17th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ),the team ofCentral South University stood out among 100universityteams from more than 20 countries and regions and won the second place in the total score of writtenexamination.More than 60 researcharticles written by undergraduate studentshave published and 2 national patentswere acquired by students.
